OVERVIEW

Workday’s Career Hub is a centralized space for employees to discover mentors, job trainings, and other roles in their company to help in their career development. The aim for this project was to investigate a holistic experience around career exploration in Workday’s Career Hub in order for users to find value and meaning in their careers and to increase casual usage in Workday.

I aimed to leverage generative AI in Workday to help users easily create personalized career paths and development goals by enhancing their machine learning models with explicit data and expanding features to incorporate implicit and holistic data.

Career exploration user research

SUMMARY

My team and I tested low-fidelity concepts of a Career Path Builder, Career Assessment, and a Vision Board with our target audience of entry-level to mid-level employees between the ages of 21-41. Participants enjoyed building Career Paths the most because they liked the feeling of empowerment from seeing and understanding different growth trajectories in their career. The Career Assessment and Vision Board had some value but participants wanted those aspects integrated into the Career Path Builder experience.

KEY INSIGHTS

Casual Usage
Participants enjoyed the casual, “shopping-like” experience, of making a career path.

Empowerment
Participants felt empowered because they didn’t know how their careers could progress and they liked seeing, understanding, and planning possible futures at their companies.

Holistic Data Model
When thinking about their career, users want it to align with their values, passions, and interests to be happy in their companies.

Holistic career algorithm

Workday’s algorithm for career suggestions is primarily based on explicit skills provided in a user’s profile. Since our target audience wants their careers to align with more holistic data, Workday needed to update their machine-learning algorithm for career suggestions to include data points like a user’s values, motivations, and aspirations.

Career path builder v1 design

These mocks are the initial version of Workday’s Career Pathing tool, where it’s using their current tech stack and machine-learning algorithm in a step-by-step experience. The career pathing data gathered from this release would help grow Workday’s career pathing data to support and build towards use cases for generative AI career paths.

These designs demonstrate a career pathing experience that leverage generative AI to create career paths from a user's current role.

Conclusion

The research and product vision I crafted with my team helped construct a long-term plan for Career Exploration and Planning in Workday to increase casual usage by leveraging holistic data models and generative AI.
